Year 1

Dear Parents / Carers,

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a good start to the New Year. 2012 is going to be an exciting year. This week we have the next in our series of intra school Olympic competitions. So please ask your child what they have been doing in PE and what else they have learned about the Paralympics.

Our topic this half term is ‘How do things move?’ We started last week with a visit from a pilot. We learned how to write questions and where we could look or who we could go to, to find out the answers. The children asked lots of interesting questions and we learned a lot about flying a plane!

In Literacy we are: Learning how to write labels and captions and how to find information in a non-fiction book.  We will be having a go at making our own books as well as a whole class book on the theme of transport. We will also be learning how to follow and write instructions.

In Numeracy we are: Learning how to partition two digit numbers into their tens and units. We will continue learning number facts such as number bonds to ten and twenty and addition facts for numbers to ten and twenty. We will be learning how to use the facts we already know to help us do calculations and solve problems.

In Science we are: Learning about forces, particularly about pushes and pulls. This fits in really well with our topic and we will be looking at how different vehicles move and why a moving object might go faster or why it might stop.

We will be making our own hot air balloons, helicopters and aeroplanes as well as learning about the history of flight. Our Geography work will be based on journeys.

We have had a major reorganisation of our reading books over Christmas and the children will now be able to choose their own book from their reading level. We feel choice is really important as the children enjoy reading books they have chosen themselves and are more enthusiastic about their reading. The new levels are graded differently and more accurately than before and include books from a variety of different reading schemes. One level of book on the old scheme may now be split over more than one of our new levels. We hope it will work well for the children and ensure that their books are both instructional and enjoyable.  Please do remember to bring in book bags every day.

PE will be on Monday for Green and Pink classes and Wednesday for Yellow class. The whole year group has a class dance session on Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure the children have their PE kit on these days. It would also be useful if your child could bring in a named water bottle each day.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Beaumont, Mrs Jeffrey and Miss Roberts

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome to Year 1. We hope you all had a lovely summer break and are looking forward to an exciting year. This is just a quick information letter to keep up to date with our new topic and weekly events.

Our first topic is ‘All about ourselves’ and we would really appreciate it if your child could bring in a photo of themselves as a baby and, if possible, a toy or object that they used as a baby. (Nothing expensive please!) This will help with our topic writing and class discussions.

In Literacy we are: Reading a selection of stories with incidents and settings that are familiar to the children. Children will learn to identify characters, settings and main events in the stories.

In Numeracy we are: Learning to count reliably at least twenty objects and read and write numerals up to 20. Children will learn to identify 1 and 2 more/less when given a number to 20. They will learn to add by ‘counting on’ and understand subtraction as taking away, using relevant vocabulary and equipment.

In Science we are: Learning about our senses and how we can use them to explore the world around us. We will also learn that humans and other animals move and grow.

We are starting an art topic based around ourselves and will be producing portraits in different mediums. In Geography we will be exploring the area around the school and learning about addresses.

As you can see, it will be a busy and hopefully very enjoyable half term. Reading books will be sent home every day so that they are available if you have time to read. We don’t expect the children to read every night but the more practise they have, the faster they will progress. Please send the books back to school each morning even if you have not had a chance to read so that we can read in school.

PE will be on Mondays for Green and Pink classes and Wednesday for Yellow class. The whole year group has a class dance session on Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure the children have their PE kit on these days. It would also be useful if your child could bring in a named water bottle each day.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Beaumont, Mrs Jeffrey and Miss Roberts.
