Reception

What are Red, Orange and Purple Class doing this half term?

Spring 1

In Personal, Social and Emotional Development – the children will be encouraged to be self-motivated and to be independent and confident learners.  Through class assemblies the children will learn about standing up for their own rights and having a positive self-image.  They will take part in whole school assemblies and our SEAL topic this term will focus on the theme of 'Going for Goals'.  As well as individual targets in their learning the children will be asked to think of something they want to achieve outside of school and about the importance of perseverance to achieve it.  You can help at home by talking to your child about personal goals.

In Communication, Language and Literacy – we will be continuing to ask the children to retell narratives with particular reference to the beginning, middle and end of a story and to write in greater detail using independent spelling whenever possible.  The children will learn to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction and learn how to use the Contents and Index page.  We will be continuing with Guided Reading in addition to their individual reading.  This is where the children read the same book in groups and focus on different aspects of reading.  The children will be starting to access the new reading system which has been implemented throughout school.  The majority of children will begin to choose their own books from a selection of levelled books.  This will mean that they may read the books in a different order to the lists on the reverse of the books.  This is fine and is intended to give children greater ownership of their reading and thereby (hopefully!) increased interest, enjoyment and progress.  In 'Letters and Sounds' we will be revising the sounds learned last term and will learn ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, or, ur, oi, ow, ure, ear.  We will be learning to read a range of high frequency and 'tricky' words.  You can help at home by reading regularly and providing opportunities to 'have a go' at writing e.g. shopping lists, thank you letters, cards etc.

In Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy – the children will learn to count in 2s and 10s.  This is the beginning of multiplication but the children need to understand the counting of 'sets of objects' rather than rote learning times tables at this stage.  They will learn to recognise and recreate simple patterns including basic symmetry and will be introduced to block graphs and how to interpret them.  We will continue to practise addition and subtraction and extend the children's understanding of the language of maths e.g more/less, count on, count back, subtract, takeaway etc.  We will also be encouraging the children to begin to record their calculations.  You can help at home by practising counting in 2s and 10s.

In Knowledge & Understanding of the World – our topic is 'Weather'.  We will be discussing the changes to their immediate environment and will take opportunities to investigate weather that we experience locally.  The children will be encouraged to describe using their senses, ask questions and make predictions.  In Designing and Making we will be learning to plan simple projects and practise using tools and joining techniques.  In ICT the children will be developing their confidence with mouse control on the laptops.  They will also be learning about different cultures and beliefs e.g. Chinese New Year.  You can help at home by encouraging your child to watch weather forecasts and observe the weather.  We would be grateful for the loan of any topic related books – both fiction and non-fiction.

In Physical Development – the topic will be 'Stretching and Curling' and the children will be learning to take their weight on different parts of their body.  They will continue to develop their understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including taking regular exercise and will use the quadrangle for physical activities as well as other aspects of the curriculum.  You can help at home by talking to your child about healthy eating and by providing appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear for the weather as we will be going outside despite the rain!

In Creative Development – the children will be learning to combine media to create new effects and to create different textures.  They will also be learning about hot and cold colours and how to use these to create moods in paintings.  In Music the children will be using instruments to represent the different seasons and weather and will learn to recognise repeated sound patterns.  By the use of drama the children will be encouraged to re-enact stories such as We're Going On A Bear Hunt and Noah's Ark and they will have opportunities to be involved in role play e.g. ice cream parlour, beach cafe and Guiseley Weather Centre!
